What is an endodontist?
An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in treatment to help save teeth. An endodontist specializes in problems with the inside of the tooth: the pulp, which is made up of nerves, blood vessels, and other soft tissues. One of the most common procedures these dental professionals perform is a root canal, which involves removing the infected pulp from a tooth and sealing it up. Other procedures may include re-treatment, regeneration, or surgical procedures to save teeth.
What is a Diplomate?
A Diplomate is one of a small percent of endodontists that has been certified by the American Board of Endodontics and has become board certified in his field. To become a diplomate or board certified, one must successfully complete postdoctoral study in an ADA approved specialty program. Next, your endodontist must pass three examinations, first, a one-day written exam testing a broad range of fields including: anatomy, biochemistry, pathology, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology, radiology, statistics, clinical endodontics and related disciplines. Your endodontist then submitted documentation of a variety of cases from his own practice. These were diverse and complex cases, to demonstrate exceptional knowledge, skills and expertise in the field of endodontics. After completing these, the final phase of Board Certification is an oral exam, where a panel of experts questioned your endodontist about a variety of treatment and difficult diagnosis situations. Throughout this process your endodontist demonstrated a high level of skill in problem solving, decision making, analysis, and evaluation.
